COLLECT OF THE DAY
Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. First Lesson Isaiah 11:1-10
A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide by what his ears hear;
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist,
and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
The wolf shall live with the lamb,
the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
the calf and the lion and the fatling together,
and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze,
their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,
and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den.
They will not hurt or destroy
on all my holy mountain;
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.
On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.
Lector The word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.

Second Lesson Romans 15:4-13
Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,
"Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles,
and sing praises to your name";
and again he says,
"Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people";
and again,
"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples praise him";
and again Isaiah says,
"The root of Jesse shall come,
the one who rises to rule the Gentiles;
in him the Gentiles shall hope."
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Lector The word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
Please stand, as able.
The Holy Gospel Matthew 3:1-12
Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
All Glory to you, Lord Christ.
In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,
“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.’”
Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon The Rev. Steven Metcalfe
The Nicene Creed
recited in unison.
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven:
By the power of the Holy Spirit he became Incarnate from
the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
And his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son, he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
And the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Prayers of the People
Prayers of the People for Advent
As we joyfully await the full manifestation of God’s reign in Christ, let us pray for the needs of the church and the world.
O Wisdom, you come forth from the mouth of the Most High and reach from beginning to end, mightily and sweetly ordering all things. Behold and bless your church, remembering especially our presiding bishop Sean, our bishop Kara, and all ministers. Be present in guiding life of this and every congregation.
Come and teach us the way of prudence.
O Adonai, God of the Covenant, you appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush and on Mount Sinai gave your law. Forgive us when we stray from your guidance and will.
Come and redeem us for our life together.
O Root of Jesse, before you rulers will shut their mouths, and nations will bow in worship: We pray for your peace and justice throughout the whole world; be present with all whose lives are ravaged by and violence, war, and injustice. Guide the leaders of this and every nation into the paths of peace and goodwill.
Come save us and do not delay.
O Key of David, you open and no one can shut, you shut and no one can open: Guide us to open the doors of hope for the unemployed, the unhoused, the imprisoned, and all who are suffering; and to closing the doors of oppression, discrimination, poverty, and injustice.
Come and help us loose the bonds of oppression.
O King and Desire of the Nations, you are the cornerstone that makes us one: We pray for those in any need, sickness, or trouble, remembering especially those on our parish prayer list.
Come and heal the people you fashioned out of clay.
O Dayspring, radiance of the Light Eternal and Sun of Righteousness: Bring into the light of your love all who have died, and bring comfort to all those who mourn.
Come and enlighten all who sit in darkness and the shadow of death.
O Emmanuel, Expected One and Savior, we give thanks for all the blessings of this life; Make each of us ready to receive you into our hearts, to serve you in all whom we meet, and to greet you in the fullness of your glory at the day of your appearing.
Come and save us, O Lord our God.
Presider Let us pray together for Christ Church’s search process for the next Rector.
All Loving God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on this parish and guide those who shall discern and choose its next rector, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Great Thanksgiving Rite II Eucharistic Prayer B, Expansive language
All who are able stand
SURSUM CORDA
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God,
Creator of heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and
death, and to make us heirs of everlasting life; that when Christ shall come again in power and great
triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing.
Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this
hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
SANCTUS
Celebrant and People:
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation;
in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days, you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin
Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In Christ, you have delivered us from evil, and made
us worthy to stand before you. In Christ, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper Jesus took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,
“Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
We remember Christ’s death,
We proclaim Christ’s resurrection,
We await Christ’s coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Savior of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, through whom we are acceptable to you, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mary, the mother of God, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your children, through Jesus Christ our Savior, the first born of all creation, the head of the church, and the author of our salvation.
By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours almighty God now and forever. AMEN.

This sanctuary of my soul,
Unwitting I keep white and whole,
Unlatched and lit, if Thou should'st care

And listening ears, Thy servant stands.

To Thy great service dedicate.
My soul, keep white and whole.
Please stand, as able.

ADVENT GATHERING FOR CONTEMPLATIVE LECTIO DIVINA
Dear Christ Church family, we invite you to welcome the beautiful quiet Advent season with Sunday morning contemplative prayer (Lectio Divina). Starting on Sunday, Nov, 30th we’ll meet each of the four Sundays during Advent at 9:30-10:30 am in the Guild Room. (It’s fine if you need to come late or leave early.) There will, of course, be snacks.
What is Lectio Divina? The roots of this practice lie in ancient Jewish meditative reading during which the faithful recited, memorized, or “chewed over” the words of the Scripture. Early Church writers continued to teach that Scripture should be read inwardly, leading the reader to communion with God. The practice continues in various forms to this day.
